Official Sharm El Sheikh taxi tariff: what the source says

South Sinai Governorate published a tariff for metered taxis operating in Sharm El Sheikh on 10 March 2026: EGP 29 at the start of the ride and EGP 14 for each kilometre. We checked the official announcement on 20 October 2026; the source is linked below. It establishes a meter tariff, not a fixed fare from the airport to every hotel.

The announcement does not tell us whether a particular driver will use the meter or what any airport charges, waiting or extras will be. Ask how the fare will be calculated before boarding. If a driver offers a fixed amount, confirm the whole-car price, currency and included stops. Check for newer notices before travelling.

Meter fare, taxi quote or private transfer?

For a street taxi, ask about the meter and any extras first; if you accept a fixed quote, write down the total and currency. A negotiated quote should not be presented as the official tariff. Old blog prices are not a reliable quote for your arrival.

With an app such as inDrive, check the amount and pickup point in the app before accepting. Driver availability is not guaranteed. A private transfer is arranged in advance for your group. The table here shows published Charm Rental transfer offers per vehicle, with driver, rather than street-taxi fares. Compare a vehicle that fits your passengers and luggage, then send a request; wait for confirmation before treating the trip as booked.

Ride-hailing apps: Careem and inDrive work, Uber does not

inDrive has an official Sharm El Sheikh page. The app works on a bid model: you propose the fare, drivers accept or counter, and the page shows cash as the payment method. A marketing page does not prove how many drivers are online or whether airport pickups work, so open the app on arrival and see what is available.

According to our local partner companies in Sharm (October 2026), Careem and inDrive both work in Sharm El Sheikh. Uber does not: it does not operate in Sharm El Sheikh or elsewhere on the Sinai peninsula, only in mainland Egyptian cities such as Cairo and Hurghada. Uber's own city-page list for Egypt agrees, because it has no Sharm El Sheikh page. Do not plan your ride around Uber. For Bolt we found no evidence of service in Sharm El Sheikh.

Driver availability for Careem and inDrive can vary at the airport and late at night, and with inDrive you offer a fare and pay in cash, so settle the price in the app before you set off.

All of this was checked on 15 October 2026 and can change. Install and set up whichever app you want before the trip, load a local SIM or eSIM, and keep a second option in mind in case no driver accepts.

Local microbuses

Local minibuses, usually blue and white, run a fixed north to south route through the resort area. You hail one from the roadside, pay the driver and tell the driver where to stop. Alpitour quotes a short microbus ride at roughly 10 to 20 EGP, and older Wikivoyage text says drivers may ask for more from tourists at night.

They are cheap, but they are not convenient with suitcases or children, we found no official published routes or fares, and the driver usually announces the destination aloud. They suit a short hop along the main road, not an arrival from the airport with luggage.

Staying safe in a taxi

The UK Foreign Office advises against travelling alone in a taxi, especially at night, and suggests sharing the driver's details, the trip and your live location with a friend. This advice is aimed in particular at women travelling alone, but the habit is sensible for anyone.

Practical steps: note the driver's ID or the car number if one is displayed, keep your phone charged, do not leave your passport or valuables in the boot, and do not hand over money before you reach the destination. If something goes wrong at the airport, the tourist police office in the terminal is the place to report it.

Pre-booked private transfer or a car with driver

Charm Rental is not a taxi dispatcher and does not send street taxis. It offers pre-booked private transfers and cars with a driver from local companies. For a transfer, the price is fixed per vehicle, driver included, and the current lowest price for each area is shown in the table on this page and on the airport transfer page. Many people choose this when they arrive late, travel with luggage or children, or simply do not want to negotiate.

For a day with several stops, a car with a driver by the hour is the closer match to what people often try to do with a taxi: a hotel, a restaurant, a dive centre and back. Agree the stops and the duration in your request. The request is free and no online payment is taken. For a child seat, choose a car that shows "Child seat on request" on its offer card and mention the child's age in the request. Ask in the request about anything else you need confirmed, such as the meeting point or waiting time after a delayed flight.

Longer rides and self-drive as an alternative

For distances beyond town, a pre-booked transfer or a day trip is usually more practical than flagging a taxi. As road estimates without traffic, Dahab is about 90 to 95 km from the airport, roughly 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30. St Catherine is about 205 km, roughly 2 hours 45 to 3 hours 30. Cairo is about 500 km, roughly 6 to 7 hours including the tunnel and checkpoints. Ras Mohammed National Park is a common day trip too; check entry and permit conditions before you travel.

If you prefer to go on your own schedule, self-drive rental is the other option. Compare the car, deposit and pickup point on the rental page. The deposit is set by the company that owns the car and is shown on the car's page before you send a request; it is typically 300 to 500 US dollars or euros, and up to about 1,000 for an expensive car, and some companies accept your passport for the rental period instead of a cash deposit, so ask in your request. According to our partners, a national driving licence from any country is enough to rent; the UK Foreign Office and German and Austrian motoring clubs still advise carrying an International Driving Permit for police checks. A rental does not include a driver or a local guide.

What to put in your airport-transfer request

Send the arrival date and local time, flight number, full hotel name, passenger count and the number and size of bags. For a hotel group with several properties, name the exact hotel rather than only the brand. If you land after midnight, check the calendar date carefully. Mention the child’s age if you need a child seat and ask for written confirmation that it will be provided. Before travelling, keep the confirmed meeting instructions and contact details available offline; an enquiry alone is not a confirmed pickup.
