Petrol price Egypt: what a litre costs and what a Sharm trip will cost
Short answer: since 10 March 2026 a litre of 95-octane petrol costs EGP 24.00 in Egypt, 92-octane costs EGP 22.25, 80-octane costs EGP 20.75 and diesel EGP 20.50, and the same prices were still in force on 9 October 2026. Fuel prices are set by the state, and the pricing committee can change them at any time, so check before you travel. Below you will find the history of the latest changes, worked examples of fuel cost on routes from Sharm El Sheikh with the consumption assumption clearly labelled, and practical tips. Information checked on 15 October 2026.

Current fuel prices in Egypt
According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, as reported in the press, since Tuesday 10 March 2026 the prices per litre are: 95-octane petrol EGP 24.00, 92-octane petrol EGP 22.25, 80-octane petrol EGP 20.75 and diesel EGP 20.50. Natural gas for vehicles costs EGP 13 per cubic metre. The daily price list of 9 October 2026 shows the same values and a note that there is no change.
These are state prices, so in principle they do not differ between stations. The fuel pricing committee can change them at any time, so check the current price before you travel. We do not give figures in euros or dollars because exchange rates move; convert at the rate on the day.
How prices changed and why they may change again
For context: on 17 October 2025 the committee raised petrol prices by about EGP 2 per litre and said they would be frozen for at least a year. The freeze was broken by the rise of 10 March 2026, of EGP 3 per litre. According to press reports, in early February 2026 95-octane cost EGP 21 and 92-octane EGP 19.25, which fits the level after the October 2025 rise.
The practical conclusion: do not fix your budget rigidly. The prices on this page are true on the date we checked, but we do not guarantee them for the day of your trip.
What fuel costs on routes from Sharm El Sheikh: worked examples
The figures below are plain arithmetic: distance times an assumed consumption times the price per litre. The assumption, which is not data for any particular car: a car using 8 litres per 100 km. Distances are road estimates without traffic and without checkpoint delays, computed from OpenStreetMap data. The first figure is 95-octane, the second 92-octane, one way.
Ras Mohammed gate, about 30 km: about 2.4 litres, so about EGP 58 and 53. Dahab, about 95 km: about 7.6 litres, so about EGP 182 and 169. Nuweiba, about 150 km: about 12 litres, so about EGP 288 and 267. St Catherine, about 205 km: about 16.4 litres, so about EGP 394 and 365. Taba, about 220 km: about 17.6 litres, so about EGP 422 and 392. Cairo, about 500 km: about 40 litres, so about EGP 960 and 890. For a round trip, double the figure.
If your car uses 6 litres per 100 km, 100 km costs about EGP 144 on 95-octane and EGP 133.50 on 92; at 10 litres, EGP 240 and 222.50. Work out your own assumption: litres equal kilometres times consumption divided by 100.
Which fuel a rental car uses
We do not state in advance which petrol your rental car takes, because it depends on the model. Ask the company in your request and check the label on the fuel cap. Also ask what fuel level you must return the car with, and note the level at pickup. The fuel terms of the contract are set by the rental company.

Paying at the station and budgeting
We found no source describing how card payments work at filling stations in South Sinai, so as general advice carry cash in Egyptian pounds, especially for longer trips outside Sharm. Plan to fill up before you set off towards Dahab, Nuweiba or Taba, and do not leave it to the last moment.
