Car hire in Sharm El Sheikh under 25: minimum age and licence period
There is no single minimum age for renting a car in Sharm El Sheikh, because each rental company sets its own. The motoring clubs we checked on 15 October 2026 quote 21 or 23 as the lowest age and one or two years of holding a licence, and they disagree with each other. If you are under 25, expect that some cars are closed to you and that a young-driver charge may apply, and ask before you book. The car page or the company's reply states the age.

What is the minimum age to rent a car in Sharm El Sheikh?
It depends on the company and on the car. The figures published by neutral sources are guides, not rules for every desk. Because the company that owns the car makes the decision, the only number that counts for your booking is the one on the car page or in the company's reply to your request. Treat any figure on a general website, including this one, as a starting point and ask before booking.
We have not found a sourced figure for the legal minimum age for a private-car licence in Egypt, so we do not state one. What matters in practice is the age the rental company requires.
What the motoring clubs say, and why they disagree
The German motoring club ACE says that the holder of an International Driving Permit must be at least 21 and must have held the licence for at least one year. The Austrian club OeAMTC says that rental drivers must be at least 23 and have held a licence for at least two years. Both pages were checked on 15 October 2026, and one of them, the German one, is not fully up to date on other points, which is a reason to treat the numbers with care.
The two figures differ, and neither is a legal text that binds a Sharm rental company. They are best read as the range, from 21 to 23, within which companies tend to set their own limit. Check again before you travel: rules and company policies change.
How long must you have held your licence?
The same sources point to one year at the low end and two years at the higher end. International brokers, which are different from our partner companies, usually tie the period to the class of car: one year for an economy car, two or more years for mid-size cars, and three or more for luxury cars and large SUVs. That is general market practice, not our terms, but it shows a pattern: the more expensive the car, the older and more experienced the driver must be. If you passed your test recently, choose a smaller car first and ask about the licence period in your request.
Young-driver charges and upper age limits
International brokers commonly add a daily young-driver surcharge for drivers under 23 or under 25, and the Austrian club notes that drivers under 25 are sometimes charged a young-driver fee. Whether a company on our platform charges one is for that company to say, so ask in your request whether a charge applies to your age, and what the total is. The Austrian club also notes that some renters cap the age of the driver at 60, so older drivers should ask as well.
Ask about the deposit at the same time. A younger driver may be asked for more than the usual amount, or for a particular type of car only, so read our guide to the car rental deposit before you choose.
How to check the age before you book
Open the page of the car you like and read the rental conditions. Then send a request and write four short questions in the message field. First, the minimum age and the minimum time you must have held your licence for this car. Second, whether a young-driver charge applies to you and how much it would be. Third, whether a second driver can be added if a friend or relative is older. Fourth, what documents to bring: our guide to the documents needed to rent a car has the list, and our guide to the International Driving Permit explains the permit.
The company answers before you travel. If the answer is no, you have lost nothing, and you can choose another car or another way to travel.
If you are too young to rent
You still have good options. A car with a driver by the hour gives you a vehicle for sightseeing or a day trip without any age question, because a driver comes with the car. A private airport transfer takes you from the airport to your hotel. For short rides inside the resort, taxis and ride apps work for travellers of any age, and our taxi guide explains how fares are agreed. If a friend or relative is old enough, they can be the main driver, and you can ask whether you may be added as a second one.
The current lowest price for each option is shown on its page. We do not quote prices in the guides.
