Sharm El Sheikh taxi app: does Uber work, and what about Careem and inDrive

Short answer: Uber does not work in Sharm El Sheikh, while Careem and inDrive do. That is the word of our local partner companies in Sharm (October 2026). Uber has city pages for Cairo and Hurghada but none for Sharm El Sheikh, and inDrive has its own official Sharm page. Below we cover each app, what we could not confirm, and how to set up your phone before you fly. We are not a taxi service: Charm Rental is a platform where you book a car rental or a transfer with a driver. Street taxis have their own page.

SharmTaxi: a local app to compare with inDrive

SharmTaxi has a service website linking to its iPhone and Android downloads, and describes airport transfers. The iPhone listing links back to that website; both sources were checked on 20 October 2026. This is a separate service from Charm Rental.

Use the operator’s own download links rather than choosing solely by a similar app name. Before relying on a ride, check whether registration works on your phone, which payment method is offered and where the driver will collect you. A store listing is not evidence that a driver is waiting now, that a quoted price is the lowest, or that a child seat is included.

An app ride and a pre-booked private transfer are different choices. For a transfer here, compare the actual vehicle, passenger and luggage capacity, then send a free request and wait for the local provider’s confirmation.

Uber in Sharm El Sheikh: it does not work

According to our local partner companies in Sharm (October 2026), Uber does not work in Sharm El Sheikh or anywhere else on the Sinai peninsula. Uber operates only in mainland Egyptian cities such as Cairo and Hurghada. That matches what Uber's own site shows: its list of Egyptian city pages, checked 15 October 2026, includes Alexandria, Cairo, Damietta, Hurghada, Mansoura, Suez, Tanta and Zagazig, but not Sharm El Sheikh.

Some guides online list Sharm among Uber's cities, and other travellers say it does not work here. We trust the companies that operate on the ground every day, and we suggest not planning your trip around Uber. If you use it in Cairo or Hurghada, switch to another option in Sharm.

Careem and inDrive: what works and how

According to our local partner companies, Careem works in Sharm El Sheikh. We say this plainly: we found no official Sharm page on Careem's own site (checked 15 October 2026), so we rely on our partners and on a February 2026 recommendation from the Italian tour operator Alpitour, which suggests Careem and inDrive for Sharm.

inDrive has its own official service page for Sharm El Sheikh. The model differs from ordinary apps: you offer your own fare for the ride and drivers accept it or counter. The page lists cash payment and the classes Ride, Comfort and Moto, with a starting price of about 30 Egyptian pounds. That is an opening figure on a marketing page, not a tariff. The existence of the page does not prove you will always find a driver at the airport: no source confirms airport pickups on inDrive.

Bolt, WhatsApp drivers and other options

Bolt launched in Cairo in March 2024. We found no evidence that it works in Sharm El Sheikh, so do not assume it does. The same goes for other apps familiar from Europe: we have no source confirming they work in Sharm.

WhatsApp numbers of drivers and hotel taxi men circulate online. We cannot verify any of them, so treat them with caution: agree the price, vehicle and meeting point in writing, do not pay in advance, and share no more personal details than you need. A more predictable option is a transfer with a driver booked in advance, where the price per vehicle is known before you land. Current prices are on the airport transfer page.

Apps and the airport

SharmTaxi’s own website describes airport pickups; that is a provider statement, not a guarantee of a driver for your flight. For any app, confirm the terminal exit, pickup point, luggage and final amount before accepting. A location pin alone may not identify the right door.

Prepare a fallback for an unavailable driver or a phone without data: a previously confirmed private transfer, your hotel’s agreed pickup, or an airport taxi whose meter or fixed quote and extras you confirm before boarding. Keep the flight date correct after midnight and save the agreed meeting instructions offline.

Setting up before you fly, and safety

Download Careem and inDrive at home, create your account and confirm your phone number before you land. The apps need internet. According to SIM and eSIM vendor blogs, operator counters at the airports sell tourist SIMs and ask for your passport, with queues in the high season. We quote no prices because the sources are unofficial and inconsistent. An eSIM can be bought online from home.

The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) advises, especially for women travelling alone and at night, to avoid travelling in a taxi alone and to share the details of the driver, the trip and your live location with a friend. A good habit with any app: check the plate number, do not pay before you arrive, and carry cash in small notes.
