Car rental in Sharm El Sheikh: what to check before driving

Choosing your rental car

Car rental in Sharm El Sheikh gives you flexibility around Naama Bay, Nabq and Hadaba. Compare the exact car, rental total, mileage and pickup arrangements. Before driving to Dahab or elsewhere in South Sinai, confirm that the rental agreement and insurance allow your route. Photograph the car, fuel gauge and existing damage at collection.

Documents and international driving permits

Check Egypt's driving rules before you travel. Carry your passport, valid national driving licence and rental papers. Foreign drivers should arrange an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside their national licence and confirm the accepted format with the issuing authority and rental provider. An IDP does not replace your original licence.

Insurance, excess and deposit

Car rental insurance, the excess and the security deposit are different things. Ask what damage is covered, which exclusions apply and what you may have to pay after a claim. Confirm the deposit amount, payment method and refund conditions in writing. Do not assume that tyres, glass or every incident are covered, or that a deposit is always returned immediately.

Accidents, incidents and police

After an accident in Egypt, prioritise safety: call 123 for an ambulance if anyone is injured and 122 for police assistance. Notify the rental provider and insurer promptly; follow police instructions and ask about the report needed for the claim. Photograph damage only when safe. At checkpoints, stay calm and show your documents when requested. Tourist police can be reached on 126.
