Sharm El Sheikh airport is the main arrival point for Egypt’s Red Sea coast, and many travellers choose a car to explore on their own, without organised excursions and without haggling with taxi drivers. How car pickup works after you arrive

You choose a car, enter your dates and send a request. At the request step you can add your flight number, which helps the company prepare for your arrival. The company confirms the request, and only then is the car held for you.

The exact pickup point and time are agreed with you by the company after confirmation. The airport has two terminals close to each other, so when you get the confirmation, ask where exactly you will meet the company’s representative. Do not assume that someone will be waiting with a name sign, or for how long they will wait if your flight is late; clarify that in your request too.

What to do after landing, before you reach the car

Before you collect the car there is passport control. According to the UK Foreign Office (FCDO), visa kiosks at the airport are located before the immigration counters, and a visa costs 30 US dollars, cash only. You do not need to buy a visa from an agent, and agents often charge more. If someone harasses you, report it to the tourist police in the terminal.

Citizens of the EU, UK and US who fly into Sharm and stay under 15 days at the resorts of Sharm, Dahab, Nuweiba and Taba do not need a visa and receive a free stamp at the airport. Going beyond those areas requires a visa. Checked 15 October 2026; check the current rules before you travel.

Your passport must be valid for at least six months from arrival and have a blank page. After immigration and baggage collection, allow some time before meeting the company’s representative, and give your flight number in the request so that the company can keep track.

From the airport to your hotel: distances and drive times

The distances below are road estimates without traffic; in practice, especially in the evening and at checkpoints, the drive can take longer. Nabq Bay is about 8 km away, 10 to 15 minutes. Sharks Bay is about 11 km and 15 minutes, Al Montazah about 13 km and 15 to 20 minutes. Naama Bay is about 11 to 14 km from the airport, usually 15 to 20 minutes. Old Market is about 20 km and 20 to 25 minutes, while Hadaba and Ras Um Sid are about 23 to 25 km and 25 to 30 minutes.

Further afield: Dahab is about 90 to 95 km, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes to 1.5 hours; Nuweiba about 150 km, around 2 hours. The Ras Mohammed park gate is about 30 km away.

For longer trips check in your contract where the car may go. Cairo is about 500 km and usually takes 6 to 7 hours including checkpoints.

Fuel, checkpoints and driving after dark

Official fuel prices in Egypt since 10 March 2026 are EGP 24.00 per litre for 95-octane petrol, EGP 22.25 per litre for 92-octane and EGP 20.50 per litre for diesel. Sources show these were still in force on 9 October 2026; checked 15 October 2026. They can change at any time, so treat them as a guide. Ask the company which fuel the car takes and in what state it should be returned.

Police and military checkpoints on the roads of South Sinai are common. The FCDO notes that police check ID regularly. Keep your passport or a copy, your licence and the car’s papers in the car.

The FCDO also advises against driving outside main cities and resorts at night, because accidents are common and lighting is usually only found near larger towns. If you land late in the evening, think about whether you want to start driving straight away. Seat belts are required and on alcohol the rule most guides quote is zero tolerance. Speed limits differ between sources, so follow the signs.

When an airport transfer is better than a rental car

A car makes sense if you plan several outings, for example to Dahab or Ras Mohammed, and want freedom to move. If you only need the trip from the airport to your hotel and back, a private transfer with a driver is simpler: you do not have to drive after a flight, look for parking or leave a deposit.
