Sharm El Sheikh public transport and getting around: microbuses, taxis, apps and cars

Short answer: Sharm El Sheikh is a long strip of resorts along the coast, and there is no scheduled city bus network, so you move between areas by microbus, taxi, app, hotel shuttle or car. Walking only works inside one area. This guide covers each option, gives road distances between the main areas, and says plainly what we could not confirm. Airport taxis and street taxi fares have their own pages, which we link below. We do not quote Charm Rental prices here: the current price per vehicle is shown on the offer pages.

Getting around Sharm: one ride or a car for your stay?

For an occasional journey, compare taxi prices and how the apps work. For several days of independent trips, compare car hire with fuel and deposit conditions. An airport transfer is a separate one-way journey with a driver; it is not a self-drive rental.

Distances: why Sharm is not a walking city

Sharm El Sheikh has no single centre. Naama Bay, Sharks Bay, Hadaba, the Old Market, Ras Um Sid, Montazah and Nabq are separate areas, linked by roads with speed bumps and no continuous pavement. The figures below are road estimates for a car, computed on OpenStreetMap data without traffic, so allow more in practice.

From Naama Bay it is about 9 km (about 10 minutes) to the Old Market, about 11 km (about 11 minutes) to Hadaba, about 12 km (about 15 minutes) to Ras Um Sid, about 11 km (about 14 minutes) to Sharks Bay, about 13 km (about 15 minutes) to Montazah and about 18 km (about 17 minutes) to Nabq. The airport is about 11 to 14 km from Naama Bay, about 8 km from Nabq and about 20 km from the Old Market. We have no reliable source for walking distances between individual hotels, so we do not give any: check your hotel's distance to your destination on a map.

Microbuses: the cheapest local transport

There is no public transport in the European sense: we found no official lines, timetable or fare table. What runs instead are microbuses, minivans of around fourteen seats, usually blue and white. According to Wikivoyage they follow a fixed north to south route through the resort, with a diversion to Hadaba. You hail one from the roadside, pay the driver and tell him where to stop. Drivers call Naama Bay "Marina".

Fares are unofficial. The Italian tour operator Alpitour quoted about 10 to 20 Egyptian pounds for a short ride in February 2026, older descriptions mention a few pounds, and Wikivoyage warns that tourists and night riders may be asked for more. Ask Aladdin (2026) says the driver usually announces the destination aloud, which is hard for first-time visitors. Checked 15 October 2026; check before you travel.

Taxis and apps: Careem and inDrive, not Uber

The official tariff for metered taxis in Sharm, published by South Sinai Governorate on 10 March 2026, is EGP 29 at the start and EGP 14 per kilometre. Before the ride, clarify whether the driver will use the meter or quote a separately agreed fare; this tariff is different from a private-transfer quote. Published figures for a short ride from the airport to Naama Bay differ widely, so treat them as an indication, not a tariff. Details and comparison are on our Taxi in Sharm El Sheikh page and on the airport taxi and transfer prices by area page.

According to our local partner companies in Sharm (October 2026), Careem and inDrive work in Sharm El Sheikh, while Uber does not work here or anywhere else on the Sinai peninsula. With inDrive you offer your own fare and pay in cash. Driver availability near the airport and late at night can vary, so keep a backup. The full app picture is in our separate guide to Uber, Careem and inDrive.

Hotel shuttles, self-drive and a car with a driver

Some hotels run their own shuttles, for example to Naama Bay or a beach. We do not describe any particular timetable or price, because it depends on the property: ask the front desk before you arrive whether a shuttle exists, how often it runs and whether it is paid.

Self-drive makes sense if you will move between areas or leave the resort during your stay: beaches, Ras Mohammed, Dahab. You pay for fuel, parking and usually a deposit, and you need your passport for police checkpoints. If you would rather not drive, a car with a driver by the hour gives you a private car and driver for a sightseeing day. For the airport there is a transfer at a fixed price per vehicle. Current prices are on the transfer and car-with-driver pages.

According to the sources we checked, there is practically no carsharing for tourists in Sharm.

What to pick: simple rules

If you spend most days in one area, microbuses and taxis or an app are enough. If you go somewhere different every other day, the taxi bill grows quickly and your own car gives freedom. For a single excursion such as Ras Mohammed or Dahab, consider a car with a driver. On arrival day the calmest choice is a transfer booked in advance.

The detailed comparison of the options is in our Taxi, transfer or car hire guide. Here we stay with distances and how each mode works.
