Sharm El Sheikh to Luxor transfer by private car with driver, both ways

A transfer from Sharm El Sheikh to Luxor crosses half of Egypt: about 1,030–1,110 km of road and more than twelve hours of driving even with nothing in the way. People still ask for it: families who would rather not fly, groups with heavy luggage, travellers who want to see the Red Sea coast, and visitors in Luxor heading back to Sinai. This page covers both directions. No driver on our site has priced the route yet, so there is a WhatsApp box instead of a booking form: send your dates, passengers, bags and overnight plans, and we will tell you what is possible.

How far is Luxor from Sharm El Sheikh by car?

We measured the drive with the OSRM routing engine on OpenStreetMap data on 2 November 2026. Sharm airport to Luxor Temple came to about 1,108 km and roughly 12 h 30 min; from Naama Bay, about 1,099 km. Forced along the Red Sea coast via Hurghada and Safaga, the route shrank to about 1,046 km, yet took slightly longer, around 12 h 40 min.

All of these are free-flow estimates, with no traffic, no checkpoint queues and no stops. Real cars meet police and army checkpoints between towns, slow down near the Suez Canal tunnel and stop for fuel and food, so the true journey is clearly longer. We therefore never promise one arrival time.

Two routes: the Red Sea coast or Cairo and the Nile valley

Both routes begin identically. The car heads north from Sharm along the Gulf of Suez side of Sinai and reaches the mainland through the Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel near Suez. Then they part: the coastal road turns south past Hurghada and Safaga, cuts inland on the Safaga–Qena road and follows the Nile south to Luxor.

The alternative swings towards the Cairo area and runs down the Nile valley. Map software rates the two almost equally in hours, which is why it often suggests Cairo despite the extra kilometres. Only the coast road, though, lets you sleep in Hurghada halfway. Mention a preference if you have one; the driver settles the final choice on the day.

Better as a two-day trip with a night in Hurghada

Twelve-plus hours of pure road time means setting off or arriving in darkness, and UK government travel advice (FCDO) recommends against driving outside main cities and resorts at night, warning that accidents are common. Splitting the journey solves that. Day one runs from Sharm to Hurghada, about 745–760 km, which realistically takes nine to ten hours.

Day two is short: Hurghada to Luxor is about 295 km, which OSRM puts at roughly three hours and three quarters without stops, so call it four. You reach Luxor with most of the day left. If you already have a hotel on the coast, in Hurghada, El Gouna or Safaga, tell us and the plan will fit around it.

Luxor drop-offs: East Bank temples, the West Bank and LXR

Luxor spreads over both banks of the Nile. The East Bank holds Luxor Temple, the riverside Corniche and, a short way north, the great Karnak complex; we measured both at about 1,108 km from Sharm airport, since the final streets barely change the total. A hotel name is usually all the driver needs.

The West Bank is the side of the Valley of the Kings, the royal tombs and Hatshepsut Temple with its terraces; the car crosses the river by road, and the measured distance is about 1,100 km. Luxor International Airport (LXR), about 6 km east of the city according to Wikivoyage, comes out at about 1,108 km. For a flight, send the departure time.

Luxor to Sharm El Sheikh: planning the return drive

Heading back, the kilometres are identical and so is the advice: leave in the morning, break the trip, and avoid finishing on the Sinai coast late at night. One workable pattern is Luxor to Hurghada on the first day, then Hurghada to Sharm on the second, so the tunnel and the long Gulf of Suez stretch fall in daylight.

Wikivoyage's Sharm guide says travellers on the Cairo route show identification at several checkpoints, so keep passports in the cabin rather than the boot. If you are flying home from Sharm airport, do not arrive on the same day you depart: a road this long can lose hours to things nobody controls. Pick-up can be a hotel on either bank or LXR.

Visa for Luxor: the Sinai entry stamp is not enough

Of all the details on this page, this one matters most. The FCDO entry requirements (checked November 2026 — check before you travel) say that visitors who fly into Sharm El Sheikh and stay under 15 days in the Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba or Taba resorts get a free entry permission stamp instead of a visa. Leaving those resorts, or staying longer, requires a visa, available at Sharm airport or online.

Luxor is on the Nile in Upper Egypt, far beyond the four resorts, so the free stamp does not stretch to it. Sort out the full visa before travel day and carry the passport itself, because police check ID regularly. The FCDO's regional advice names Luxor and the Valley of the Kings as exceptions to its Western Desert warning; reread it before departure.

Flight, bus or private car with driver: choosing and asking

If speed is everything, fly. Wikipedia's airport tables, not an official schedule, list Luxor flights from Sharm with Air Cairo and EgyptAir, and Wikivoyage notes that the journey often involves a change in Cairo. Super Jet names both cities on its own site, but we found no confirmed direct coach. For organised sightseeing rather than a transfer, there is a separate private Luxor tour on our site.

A car with a driver suits families, groups with plenty of luggage and anyone who wants to see the coast. The vehicle can be a sedan, a minivan or a minibus, and any price covers the whole car, not each seat. In WhatsApp, send the direction, dates, one-way or return, adults and children, bags, both hotels and your overnight stop.

Transfer terms: name sign, waiting, night price, cancellation

These are the standard terms of our transfer partners (November 2026). The company confirms the details for your trip when it accepts the request.
