How to get from Sharm El Sheikh to Hurghada by road
Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada look close on a map because only the Red Sea separates them, but there is no direct road between the two. A car has to go north through Sinai, pass under the Suez Canal in the Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel near Suez and then turn south down the Gulf of Suez coast: about 745–760 km, which in real life means nine to ten hours. This page is informational. No driver on our site lists this route yet, so instead of a booking form you will find a WhatsApp box: tell us your date, the number of passengers and your luggage, and we will say whether a driver can take the trip. Below you will find the ferry situation, the districts of Hurghada, the visa question and the alternatives to a car.
Request this transfer on WhatsApp
Online booking is not open on this route yet, but you can still request the trip: send your date, number of passengers and luggage on WhatsApp, and we will look for a driver and tell you the price. Asking is free.

Ferry or boat from Sharm El Sheikh to Hurghada: is there one?
This is the question most visitors type first, and the honest answer is that we cannot confirm one. Our search in October 2026 found no operator timetable and no current report of a regular passenger ferry between Sharm and Hurghada. A ferry-booking aggregator states that no sailings currently run on this pair. Older press reports describe a line that was revived and later stopped, so a boat that you read about on an old forum thread may no longer exist.
So treat the ferry as not confirmed operating in 2025–2026 (checked October 2026 — check before you travel). If you still hope to cross by sea, ask the port authority or a local travel desk in Sharm for a confirmed sailing before you plan anything around it, and keep the overland route as your fallback.
Sharm El Sheikh to Hurghada distance by road: 745–760 km
Because the Red Sea is in the way, the road goes the long way round. From Sharm the car drives north along the Sinai side of the Gulf of Suez, reaches the Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel under the Suez Canal near the city of Suez, comes out on the Egyptian mainland and then runs south along the Gulf of Suez coast to Hurghada.
Routing on OpenStreetMap data (OSRM, October 2026) gives about 745–760 km depending on the district, and between 8 h 50 min and 9 h 30 min with an empty road. Real trips are usually longer: police and military checkpoints, the tunnel approach and slower stretches add time, so plan for nine to ten hours, plus stops. Most passengers agree one or two longer breaks with the driver at the start. Leaving early in the morning keeps the longest part of the drive in daylight.

El Gouna, Dahar, Marina and the airport: where in Hurghada
Hurghada is a long strip of resorts, and the distance changes a little along it. El Gouna, the purpose-built resort town at the northern end, is the nearest point we measure, about 739 km from Sharm airport. El Dahar, the old town centre with its market streets, is about 755 km. Sakkala and the Marina area are about 758 km, the same figure as Hurghada city, and Hurghada airport (HRG) is about 760 km.
Because the road arrives from the north, the northern districts come first. When you send the request, name the hotel or the district and, if you are flying out of Hurghada, your flight departure time, so we can tell you whether the timing is realistic. A transfer that ends at the airport needs more margin than one that ends at a hotel, because of the checkpoints on the way.
Sahl Hasheesh, Makadi Bay and Soma Bay at the southern end
South of the city lie the resort areas of Sahl Hasheesh, Makadi Bay and Soma Bay. Sahl Hasheesh is about 778 km from Sharm airport, Makadi Bay about 786 km and Soma Bay, the farthest of the points we measure, about 800 km. The driving time to them is still within the same nine-to-ten-hour range once you add the real conditions, but the final stretch is a little longer than for El Gouna or the city centre.
If your hotel sits inside a gated resort, send its full name and, when you have it, the booking reference or a phone number the driver can call at the gate. Families with children can ask about a child seat; each car on our site shows seats, luggage space and whether a child seat can be requested. For a trip this long, a bigger car than you think you need is usually the more comfortable choice.
Visa: the Sinai-only stamp does not cover Hurghada
Hurghada is on the mainland, outside the Sinai resort zone. UK government advice (FCDO, August 2026) says travellers who arrive by air at Sharm and stay under 15 days at resorts in Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba or Taba need no visa and receive a free entry stamp. Anyone planning to leave those resorts, or to stay longer than 15 days, must hold a visa, which can be bought at Sharm airport or online. Hurghada is not among the four resorts, so the free stamp does not cover this journey.
Two caveats: some local operators still speak of 14 days instead of 15, and which nationalities receive the stamp is not clear in every source (checked October 2026 — check before you travel). Keep your passport in your hand luggage, not in the boot; police check identity regularly on Egyptian roads and may detain people who cannot show an ID and visa.
Bus, train, plane or private car: transport to Hurghada
Go Bus and Super Jet both serve Sharm and Hurghada, and Go Bus lists a pick-up at Nabq as well as stops in Sharm. We could not confirm that either company sells a direct Sharm to Hurghada ticket, and the land route runs via Suez and Cairo, so a bus journey may mean a change. Check the operator's own app before you plan on it. We do not quote bus times or fares.
By air, the domestic airlines EgyptAir, Air Cairo and Nile Air fly from Sharm airport; whether a flight between the two resorts is direct or needs a change, for example in Cairo, depends on the airline's schedule, which we did not research, so look at the airlines directly.
A private driver makes sense for families, for groups with a lot of luggage and for anyone who wants a single door-to-door ride. You get one price for the whole vehicle, not per person, and sending a request is free.
Day trip to Hurghada or a one-way transfer: how do you get there?
A day trip from Sharm El Sheikh to Hurghada is not realistic by road: at nine to ten hours each way, a same-day return would mean close to twenty hours in the car. If someone offers you a Hurghada day out, ask exactly how they plan to cross the sea before you pay, since we could not confirm any regular boat. There is no rail option either: our October 2026 research found no passenger train out of Sharm, even on the Cairo route. By land, this trip is a one-way transfer that moves your stay from Sinai to the mainland coast.
For a family, the practical questions are the car and the hour. A car that leaves Sharm early, with one or two agreed stops, reaches El Gouna, about 739 km away, or the city, about 758 km, before evening. Ride apps are no answer for this distance: Uber does not work in Sharm El Sheikh, and Careem and inDrive, which do operate there, cannot guarantee a driver for a trip across the Suez Canal. Send us the date, passengers and luggage on WhatsApp and we will say whether a driver can take it; any price we give is for the whole vehicle.
Enquire about Sharm to Hurghada travel
Use this page to describe your travel need, dates, exact addresses and luggage. Ask whether a journey can be arranged and which route is proposed before making connected plans. Do not infer a Hurghada car or a confirmed service from a Sharm listing, or assume a ferry is operating.
