Cairo to Sharm El Sheikh drive: distance, time, checkpoints and fuel
The drive from Cairo to Sharm El Sheikh is about 500 km and takes roughly 6 to 7 hours including the Ahmed Hamdi tunnel under the Suez Canal and the checkpoints on the way. It is possible for a tourist, but it is a long day with documents to show, fuel to plan and a visa rule that catches people out. This guide covers the route, the paperwork, fuel, night driving and the alternatives. Facts were checked on 15 October 2026; distances are road estimates without traffic, so real times can be longer.

Distance, time and route
From central Cairo to Naama Bay it is about 500 km, and about 510 km to Sharm El Sheikh Airport. As a rounded estimate that is 6 to 7 hours including the tunnel and the checkpoints, and real journeys are longer in traffic or with stops for fuel and food. The road leaves Cairo towards Suez, crosses the Suez Canal through the Ahmed Hamdi tunnel and continues south through the Sinai peninsula along the coast to Sharm. Plan the day so that the tunnel and the long stretches are behind you well before dark. The distance from Cairo Airport is slightly shorter, about 480 to 490 km.
Checkpoints and documents
Police and military checkpoints are common on the roads in Sinai, especially between cities. The UK FCDO says police check ID regularly and may detain you if you cannot show your passport and visa or a copy. Keep your passport, the rental contract and the vehicle papers within reach, not in the boot. Some travel guides add hotel booking confirmation. We found no current official source for that requirement, so treat it as a helpful extra rather than a rule. Our local partner companies accept national driving licences, but official advice from the FCDO and German and Austrian motoring clubs is to carry an international driving permit as well for road checks. If you plan to take a four-wheel-drive vehicle across the Suez crossing, the FCDO says a permit from the Ministry of Interior is required.
Fuel on the Cairo to Sharm road
Fuel prices are set by the state. The last increase we found took effect on 10 March 2026: 95-octane is EGP 24.00 per litre, 92-octane EGP 22.25, 80-octane EGP 20.75 and diesel EGP 20.50, and daily price lists still showed these figures on 9 October 2026. Prices can change at any time, so check the pump. Fill up in Cairo or Suez before the tunnel, top up again on the Sinai side and do not let the tank run low.
Night driving and road conditions
The FCDO advises not to drive outside main cities and resorts at night, and says accidents are common because of variable road conditions, dangerous driving and weak enforcement. In practice this means leaving Cairo early in the morning so that you arrive in daylight, expecting speed bumps that are not always signposted and slowing down at every checkpoint. The FCDO also advises against all but essential travel in the northern part of South Sinai, beyond the St Catherine to Nuweiba road, except for the coastal areas. Stay on the main coastal road to Sharm and do not improvise a shortcut through the interior.
Visa: Cairo arrivals and the Sinai
If you land in Cairo you need a full Egyptian visa, and that visa also covers Sinai, so you can drive to Sharm without any extra stamp. The free Sinai entry stamp given at Sharm El Sheikh Airport is the opposite: it covers only Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba and Taba, so it does not allow you to drive to Cairo. Per the FCDO a visa on arrival at approved airports costs 30 US dollars in cash, and from 1 August 2026 Cairo also offers a digital visa on arrival by card at 36 US dollars. Check the current rules before you travel; for the entry rules in detail see our guide to the Sinai visa.
Alternatives: bus, private driver, flight, one-way rental
Go Bus, Super Jet, Blue Bus and East Delta serve Cairo and Sharm, and one 2026 guide gives roughly 7 to 8.5 hours Cairo to Sharm. We could not verify fares, so check the operator's app. A private transfer with a driver avoids the driving: our car with driver and airport transfer pages show what is bookable today. Domestic carriers listed at Sharm airport include EgyptAir, Air Cairo and Nile Air. For a one-way self-drive rental from Cairo to Sharm, ask the company before you book; one-way availability is not standard, and where it exists it often carries a fee. Also check that the agreement covers all of South Sinai.
