How to get from Sharm El Sheikh to Cairo airport (CAI) by car

The road between Sharm El Sheikh and Cairo airport

The car leaves Sharm northwards and follows the Gulf of Suez coast of Sinai, the western shore of the peninsula. Near the city of Suez it drops under the Suez Canal through the Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel, comes out on the mainland and continues west towards the airport, which lies on the eastern side of Cairo.

Road distance is about 480–495 km. OpenStreetMap routing (OSRM, October 2026) shows five hours twenty-five to thirty-five minutes on an empty road, and the page quotes five and a half to six and a half hours because real journeys are longer. Checkpoints, the tunnel approach and traffic near the airport all take their share. Cairo airport is the nearest Cairo point we measure, a little closer than the city centre at about 510 km.

Planning the drive around your departure from CAI

Start from the flight and count backwards. Take the time your airline asks you to be at the airport, subtract the six and a half hours the road can take, then add a margin for a long checkpoint queue, a toilet break and a delayed pick-up. Many travellers set off the evening before and sleep near the airport, because a very early flight leaves no room for a late start.

Tell the driver your terminal and airline at booking so the car goes to the right entrance. Free-flow time is only the best case: a driver who is told the flight time can warn you if the plan is too tight. Keep passports and tickets in your hand luggage, not in the boot, and charge your phone before leaving so you can show an e-ticket if asked.

Visa and passport before the drive to Cairo

This is the part that surprises people. UK government advice says that visitors arriving by air at Sharm El Sheikh can get a free entry permission stamp if they stay under 15 days at the resorts of Sharm, Dahab, Nuweiba and Taba, and that anyone travelling outside those resorts must have a visa. Cairo is outside them, so a traveller on the free stamp who drives to Cairo airport needs a full visa first, available at Sharm airport or online. Some operators still say the stamp lasts 14 days, and which nationalities receive it is not settled in every source (checked October 2026 — check before you travel).

Carry the passport itself on the road. Police check ID regularly and may detain people who cannot show a passport and visa, or a copy.

Coach or domestic flight instead of the road

Super Jet's own website lists a Cairo Airport station among its Cairo stops and one Sharm station, at Rowaysat. A 2026 travel guide also names Go Bus, Blue Bus and East Delta on the Sharm to Cairo route, and advises confirming whether a departure leaves from Watania, Rowaysat or another Sharm terminal. We do not print timetables or fares because we could not verify them; read them in each operator's app.

EgyptAir, Air Cairo and Nile Air are listed among the domestic carriers at Sharm airport, so a flight may be an option for a traveller with little luggage. A coach or a plane cannot collect you from a hotel door, which is the one thing a private car does.

What to put in your WhatsApp message for a Cairo airport run

Because there is no booking form for this route yet, the message you send does the work a form would do. Give the date and departure time of your flight from CAI, the terminal if you know it, the number of adults and children, and how many large suitcases are coming. A family of four with big bags may need a minivan rather than a saloon, and a driver has to know that before agreeing to a trip of 480–495 km. Children's ages matter too, because a child seat can only be offered on cars that show that option.

Say where you are starting from in Sharm, whether a hotel in Naama Bay, Nabq or Hadaba or a flat near the Old Market, and whether you would rather leave the evening before and sleep near the airport. A taxi hailed on the street or a ride app is not a realistic plan for this distance: Uber does not work in Sharm El Sheikh, and while Careem and inDrive operate there, a driver who accepts a trip all the way to Cairo is not guaranteed. If we find a car, the price we come back with is for the whole vehicle, never per person.

Enquire specifically about Cairo Airport, CAI

A request for Cairo Airport should name CAI, your flight number, departure date and terminal if known. Keep it separate from a Cairo city drop-off. Ask whether this Sharm-origin journey can be arranged and agree the proposed schedule and price before relying on it for a flight.
