Dahab to Cairo and back: a 547 km day on the road
Dahab to Cairo is a long haul even by Sinai standards: about 547 km of road to the centre of the capital, which routing software puts at a little over six hours with nothing in the way and which in real life means closer to seven. Everything below works equally for Cairo to Dahab, so this one page covers both directions. It is an informational page. No driver on our site has listed this route yet, so instead of a booking form you will find a WhatsApp box: send the date, the number of passengers and how much luggage you have, and we will say whether a driver can take the trip. The sections below cover the distance, the road, the way back, where in Cairo you might be going, the visa question, and what we could and could not confirm about the Cairo to Dahab bus.

Dahab to Cairo by road: distance and time
We measured the route with the OSRM routing engine on OpenStreetMap data on 16 October 2026. From the centre of Dahab to the centre of Cairo it came to about 547 km and 6 h 17 min with free-flowing traffic. For planning, use 540–555 km, depending on which part of Dahab you leave from and which Cairo address you are heading for.
The real trip is longer than the machine's number. That figure has no checkpoints, no queue at the Suez Canal tunnel, no Cairo traffic and no stop for fuel or food. Allow roughly six and a half to seven and a half hours, and more if you arrive in the capital at rush hour. On a drive of this length it is sensible to agree one or two breaks with the driver before you set off.
Which road a car takes from Dahab to Cairo
Cairo lies on the African side of the Suez Canal, and the road from Sinai reaches it through the Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel near the city of Suez. Wikivoyage's Cairo guide describes the same tunnel from the other side: leave the Ring Road at the Suez Road junction and pass under the canal onto the Sinai Peninsula.
What we could not read on any page we trust is the exact set of roads between Dahab and the tunnel, so we do not name them. One thing is clear from our own numbers, though. Sharm El Sheikh airport to central Cairo measures about 510 km and Dahab is about 92 km from that airport, which would add up to far more than 547 km. The car therefore does not detour through Sharm; it cuts across the peninsula. Which route a driver prefers on the day, and where he stops, is something to ask when you write.

Cairo to Dahab: planning the way back
Starting in Cairo, the same 540–555 km runs in the other direction, with the tunnel under the canal first and Sinai afterwards. Leave the city early. Wikivoyage's Cairo page says driving in the capital is neither recommended nor necessary, that traffic lights are few and often ignored, and that many drivers use no headlights at night.
That last point matters, because a morning start from Cairo still brings you into Dahab after a full day, and a late start means driving in the dark. UK government advice (FCDO) says not to drive outside main cities and resorts at night, and that accidents are common because of road conditions, dangerous driving and weak enforcement of traffic law. Wikivoyage's Sinai page adds that there are several checkpoints, so keep your passport within reach rather than in the boot.
Where in Cairo: Downtown, Zamalek, Giza, Heliopolis, New Cairo
Cairo is a spread of districts rather than one centre. Downtown, around Tahrir Square, is the old commercial core. Zamalek sits on an island in the Nile, Giza lies on the west bank beyond the river, and the eastern districts of Heliopolis, Nasr City and New Cairo are the ones nearest the Suez side. Cairo International Airport is in Heliopolis, and Wikivoyage puts it about 15 km from the city centre.
Our 547 km figure is for the centre of Cairo. A hotel in New Cairo or Heliopolis is reached sooner, and a hotel beside the Pyramids in Giza adds the crossing of the whole city. When you write to us, name the hotel or the street and building number, and say whether you are heading to the airport for a flight, because that changes how early you should leave Dahab.
Visa: the Sinai-only stamp does not reach Cairo
UK government advice (FCDO, checked 16 October 2026) says travellers who arrive by air at Sharm El Sheikh and stay under 15 days at resorts in Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba or Taba do not need a visa and receive a free entry stamp. Anyone who plans to travel beyond those resorts, or to stay longer, needs a visa, which can be obtained at approved airport kiosks or applied for online as an e-visa.
Dahab is inside the stamp area and Cairo is not, so a trip between them crosses the line. Sort the visa before you leave Dahab, not at a checkpoint. FCDO also warns that police check ID regularly and may detain people who cannot show their passport and visa, or a copy. Which nationalities qualify for the stamp is not settled in every source (checked October 2026 — check before you travel).
Go Bus from Cairo to Dahab, a plane or a private car
Go Bus lists both Cairo and Dahab among the cities in its booking system, so a direct coach is plausible. Wikivoyage's Dahab page, whose transport details are several years old, mentions Go Bus services from Cairo's central bus station and a journey of about nine hours, and an East Delta bus station in Dahab. Cairo Gateway is the new name of the Turgoman station, according to Wikivoyage's Cairo page. We could not open a current timetable, so we do not quote times or fares; check the operator's app and which station your ticket uses.
Dahab has no airline service we could confirm for this page. The air alternative is to go through Sharm El Sheikh airport, about 92 km from Dahab by our measurement, which adds a road leg of its own.
A private car with a driver is one door-to-door ride for a family or a group with luggage. Where a price exists on our site it is for the whole vehicle, and sending a request is free.
Dahab to the Pyramids: when Giza is where you are going
Many people leaving Dahab are really heading for the Pyramids rather than downtown Cairo. Our 547 km figure is measured to the centre of the capital; Giza lies on the west bank of the Nile, so a hotel near the plateau adds the crossing of the whole city, usually in the slowest traffic of the day. If the Pyramids are the reason for the trip, it often makes sense to sleep in Giza and visit the next morning, rather than arriving tired after dark and trying to squeeze sightseeing into the same day.
A taxi or an app ride is not a realistic way to cover this distance. Uber does not work on the Sinai peninsula, and no ride app can promise a driver for more than 540 km across the Suez Canal. A driver arranged in advance can go straight to a Giza hotel or any other Cairo address you name, and where we can offer a car, the price is for the whole vehicle with its driver, not per seat. Send the date, passengers and luggage on WhatsApp, and say whether Giza or central Cairo is the goal.
