Sharm El Sheikh to Marsa Alam: distance, flights, bus and visa
Short answer: Marsa Alam is a long way from Sharm El Sheikh. There is no road along the Red Sea between them, so a car has to go north through Sinai, cross under the Suez Canal and then run the whole length of the mainland coast. OpenStreetMap routing gives about 970 km to Marsa Alam airport and about 1,030 km to the town, more than 11 hours of driving with no traffic at all. We found no direct flight and no confirmed ferry, and the free Sinai-only entry stamp does not cover the trip, so you need a full visa. This guide sets out the road, the air options, the bus, the visa and a short comparison with Hurghada. We checked every source on 16 October 2026; timetables change, so check before you travel. We do not drive to Marsa Alam, but we can take you to Sharm El Sheikh airport.

Sharm El Sheikh to Marsa Alam: the honest bottom line
On a map the two resorts both sit on the Red Sea, and Marsa Alam looks like the next stop down the coast. It is not. Sinai and the African mainland are separated by the Gulf of Suez, and the only fixed road link is far to the north. That is why a journey that looks like a short hop is really a full day of travel.
There are three realistic ways to do it: fly with a change in Cairo, take a very long bus ride, or go by road in a car with a driver or a rental car, ideally with a night on the way. None of them is quick. Everything below comes from the sources listed at the bottom of the page, checked on 16 October 2026. Where a source does not state something, we say so rather than guess, and we leave out schedules and fares we could not read on an official page.
By road: about 970 km to the airport, 1,030 km to the town
The route goes north from Sharm through Sinai, passes under the Suez Canal in the Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel and turns south on the Gulf of Suez side. After that it follows the coast through Zafarana and Ras Gharib to Hurghada, then on through Safaga and Quseir. OpenStreetMap routing (OSRM, October 2026) puts the drive from Sharm El Sheikh airport to Marsa Alam International Airport at about 969 km and 11 hours 27 minutes, and to Marsa Alam town at about 1,029 km and 12 hours 2 minutes.
Those are empty-road figures. Real trips are longer because of checkpoints, the tunnel approach, traffic and rest stops. The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) says not to drive outside main cities and resorts at night, and that road accidents are common because of variable road conditions, dangerous driving and weak enforcement of traffic law. Plan any road trip to arrive in daylight, ideally with an overnight stop. If you want to use a rental car, ask the company first whether it may leave the area, and do not assume it can.
Flying from Sharm to Marsa Alam: no direct flight found
The airport tables on Wikipedia carry no date and are not an official schedule. Neither the Sharm El Sheikh table nor the Marsa Alam table lists the other airport as a destination. The only Egyptian domestic route listed from Marsa Alam is EgyptAir to Cairo, and the Sharm table lists EgyptAir among the airlines serving Cairo. So the likely way to fly is through Cairo, with two tickets or one connecting ticket. We could not open an official airline or airport timetable for these legs, so we give no days, flight times or fares. Leave a generous gap at Cairo.
Marsa Alam International Airport is about 60 km north of the town, and Wikivoyage describes it as near Port Ghalib. The same table lists many flights from Europe, including from Milan, Bergamo, Rome and Prague, and from Gdańsk, Katowice and Warsaw. That does not help you from Sharm, but it shows that most air traffic to Marsa Alam arrives directly from Europe.
Bus, service taxi and ferry: what we could and could not confirm
Bus: Wikivoyage says that buses run five times a day between Cairo and Marsa Alam via Quseir and Hurghada, from a station in the north-west of the town, and that service taxis also run to Hurghada and Edfu from a stop beside the bus station. The home page of Super Jet lists Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada as destinations but, on the page we read, does not mention Marsa Alam. We could not confirm a direct Sharm to Marsa Alam ticket. Most likely it would mean changing at Hurghada or Cairo, so ask the operator and read its current timetable. We give no times or fares.
Ferry: we could not confirm a regular passenger ferry between Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada in 2025 or 2026, and the booking site we checked says none is running at present. Even a working ferry would only get you to Hurghada, which is roughly another 216 km from Marsa Alam airport by OSRM. See our guide to the Sharm to Hurghada ferry before building a plan around a boat.
Marsa Alam or Hurghada from Sharm: two different coasts
Many travellers from Poland, Italy and elsewhere compare the two before booking. From Sharm, OSRM measures about 760 km and 9 hours 6 minutes to Hurghada airport, against about 969 km and 11 hours 27 minutes to Marsa Alam airport, so Marsa Alam is roughly 200 km further. Between the two airports it is about 216 km and 2 hours 38 minutes. Wikivoyage places the town about 275 km south of Hurghada.
In character they differ. Wikivoyage describes Hurghada as a former fishing village that now has more than 100 hotels along the shore, a reputation for cosmopolitan nightlife and an airport about 8 km west of the resort strip. It adds that its reefs lie several miles offshore, so snorkellers and divers need a boat. Marsa Alam is a small town of about 9,000 people in 2021, developed since 1995, with its airport about 60 km away. Its main activities are swimming, diving, snorkelling and kitesurfing, and reefs run along most of the coast. Choose by what you want from the stay; the road distance from Sharm is only one factor.
Visa: the Sinai-only stamp does not cover Marsa Alam
Marsa Alam is on the mainland, outside the Sinai resort zone. According to the FCDO (checked 16 October 2026), travellers who arrive by air at Sharm El Sheikh and stay under 15 days at resorts in Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba or Taba do not need a visa and receive a free entry stamp at the airport. If you will go outside those resorts or stay longer than 15 days, you must get a visa, which can be bought at Sharm El Sheikh airport or online.
Marsa Alam is not one of the four resorts, so the free stamp does not cover this trip. Arrange the full visa before you travel. For British passport holders the FCDO also requires six months of validity after arrival. Keep your passport in your hand luggage: the FCDO notes that police check ID regularly and may detain people who cannot show a passport and visa.
