Sharm El Sheikh to Dahab by car: distance, checkpoints and a day plan
Dahab is a quieter coastal town north of Sharm El Sheikh, known for diving and a relaxed beach scene, and it is the easiest long day trip from the resort. This guide covers the drive: distance and time, what happens at checkpoints, what your Sinai entry stamp covers, how it compares with the bus and what to ask the rental company. Facts below were checked on 15 October 2026. Distances are road estimates without traffic, so real times can be longer.

Distance and driving time
Dahab is about 90 to 95 km from Sharm El Sheikh, roughly 92 km from the airport and about 94 km from Naama Bay. As a rounded estimate without traffic that is about 1 h 15 to 1 h 30 each way. Checkpoints, speed bumps and slow trucks can add time, so a sensible day trip allows about three hours of driving in total. Leave in the morning, spend the middle of the day in Dahab and plan the drive back so that you are in Sharm before dark. The UK Foreign Office advises against driving outside main cities and resorts at night.
Checkpoints and what to carry
Expect police checkpoints on the coastal road. The UK Foreign Office notes that police check ID regularly, ask to see your passport and may detain you if you cannot show your ID and visa. A Sharm dive operator also advises carrying your passport on the Sharm to Dahab road in case you are stopped. Carry the passport itself, not only a photo, with the car papers and the rental contract.
If the rental company keeps your passport as security instead of taking a cash deposit, agree with them in advance which ID you will carry on the road, so that you are not stopped at a checkpoint with nothing to show. According to our local partner companies (October 2026), some companies accept a passport instead of a cash deposit; ask in your request.
Your Sinai stamp covers Dahab
Dahab is one of the resort areas named by the UK Foreign Office for the free Sinai entry stamp, together with Sharm El Sheikh, Nuweiba and Taba. The stamp is for up to 15 days, although some operators still say 14, so check the date on your own stamp. Stay inside these resort areas on the free stamp; travel to Cairo, Hurghada or Luxor needs a full visa. According to our local partner companies in Sharm (October 2026), Russian and Ukrainian citizens receive the Sinai stamp for about a month, 28 to 30 days; check the current rules before you travel.
Car, bus or car with driver
By car you control the timing and can stop on the way. The alternative is a coach: East Delta and local operators run Sharm to Dahab services, and timetable listings suggest about 1.5 hours, but we could not verify current times or fares from the operators, so check the schedule at the bus station and do not rely on a fare you read online. If you would rather not drive on a road with checkpoints, a car with driver is another option: the page shows the current lowest price per vehicle, driver included, and you can confirm waiting time and the route when you send the request.
Licence, fuel and what to ask the company
According to our local partner companies (October 2026), a national driving licence from any country is accepted for the rental. The Foreign Office and German and Austrian motoring clubs separately advise carrying an International Driving Permit with the national licence for road checks. Mention Dahab in your request and ask the company to confirm that the trip is covered by the rental terms and whether a daily kilometre limit applies. Fill the tank in Sharm: the ministry's pump price for 95-octane petrol was EGP 24 per litre after the rise of 10 March 2026 and was still in force on 9 October 2026, but it can change.
